Tubal Cain: August 2011

It took a lot of packing, driving, ferry line waiting, and other details, but this weekend we successfully hiked the Tubal Cain trail! Jack was a real trooper.
A little history: We figured Jack was ready for his first backpacking trip because he A. is old enough to hike the whole way without being carried and B. is strong enough to carry his own pack (even if that pack only holds his clothes). In the end he did hike the whole way, but unfortunately only carried the pack part of the time. We chose the tubal cain trail because it seemed perfect for an almost-five-year-old boy: just over 3 miles, easy grade, and the promise of an old mine and airplane remains to see at the end! Scott and Kristine sportingly agreed to join us.
Off we go!

Snack break with Scott:

We made it! And even scrambled up to the old Tubal Cain mine entrance above our campsite. Such a cool piece of history... and even a little spooky!

Our campsite (including the "vintage" cooking table behind Anton)!

S'mores on the campfire.

The next day Jack and I hiked out while Anton and Monica stayed behind to hike the Tull Canyon trail. Then they hitched a ride back to town with the Calhouns. Here's Monica at the entrance to another abandoned mine.

They saw the remains of the airplane crash too.

Jack did a great job, but Monica was the real star of the trip. She carried a hefty pack, didn't complain once, and loved every minute.
